Gripmode started in 2018, when founder Michael "Mike" Bolvin, a goalkeeper whose clubs included Fortuna Düsseldorf, could not find gloves that met his standards during a sports scholarship in New York. His first prototypes launched in mid-2018 and sold out within 24 hours, according to the brand. Bolvin later moved the business to Switzerland to run it with his parents, and Gripmode GmbH was founded in 2021. Bolvin also makes goalkeeping videos as Modern Goalkeeping.
